RJ Composition Post

In this GCT assignment we were to master at least 3 composition types and learn new compositions in these images as well as the way to take them and the settings required to take them. This assignment gave us more "freedom" with the camera as we got to use our creativeness to create a photo with the right surroundings, the right subjects, and the right time and place depending on the genre of the photo. I've never really taken black and white photos before but as soon as i started taking them. I was instantly in love with that type of photo as it gives this classic look to the photo. This assignment really tested how well us photographers could manipulate things and subjects to turn out as a good composition photo.

Shots and Angles the Video Edition By: Kiana

February 26, 2019 Kiana Mercredi 0 Comments

For this assignment we were told to create a short video tutorial for any topic we wanted. I chose to create a video about how to make the perfect cup of homemade hot chocolate.  This was our first video assignment of the year so, we had to do some research on the basics of cinematography. We learned all kinds of shots and angles we could use to make our video and created a slide deck with the definitions. Then we had to create a storyboard to help organize our ideas and plan out what kind of content we wanted to show and how we were going to show it. Once we had everything planned out we finally got to start recording. This process was quite tricky but the storyboard made it much easier since I already knew what i had to do. After recording all the clips I needed for my video we then took it to Adobe Premiere. This was probably the hardest part of the process since I had never used the program before. With help from my friends and the information and videos Mr.Harbeck provided for us I soon got comfortable using the program and was able to produce a video I am proud to say is mine.

Shots and Angles the Vidoe Edition By: Frans

February 25, 2019 frans 0 Comments

Following our very first assignment - Shots and Angles, our current assingment is the video edition. Most of the definitions were similar, therefore we already had some insight on this assingment. Our primary task was to make a 1 minute how-to video by using the definitions we learned, and incorporating it. But, as always, we were ordered to watch multiple videos on the definitions and how to use Adobe Premier. My main topic was how to fold a shirt the fastest way. During production, I implanted 2 types of shot sequences, Perspective Shift and Same Frame Game. In conclusion, we were demanded to make 1 minute short videos. For now, enjoy watching my video.

For this assignment in GCT, we had to take photos and put them in a slide deck. This had to be done over the winter brake. Our goal was to master 3 out of 9 composition techniques. I chose to do 5 of them. I hope you enjoy my assignment.

Shots and Angles the Video Edition By: Cielo

Hello, I’m back with a new assignment! This time it was a shots and angles but video edition. We got to choose our own topic for the video. Mr. Harbeck first told us to do some research about the types of shots and sequences we can capture to make video, and we made definitions for them in our slide deck. Then, we created a storyboard to help visualize our video and so we know what type of shot to film. Once we finished filming, we soon edited on Abobe Premier. This was very new to some of us, and we learned through videos that Mr. Harbeck provided. Although, the editing was a little tricky and hard to handle, as you worked with it more it became to be more easier and you got use to it. This assignment was really new and unique since we usually take pictures and now we enhanced the work of video through the lens.

Allyza's 1 Minute Video Tutorial

February 21, 2019 allyza tabirara 0 Comments

For this assignment we were given a task to create a 1 minute tutorial video about anything we choose from. The assignments can vary from braiding your hair, training your dog, cooking videos and cleaning your glasses. For this assignment we first had to storyboard plan then finally shoot. This was pretty exciting and fun for me, because i have never filmed a cooking video and created a small studio to shoot it. After filming our videos we had to post produce it and make it an actual video using Adobe Premiere Pro. This application is already an application i have used in the past year to edit some home videos of my friends and i. Throughout this video we had to include some shots that we learned from the past shots and angles project we did. It was also fun helping people figure out how to use the application and seeing them get a hang of it. In this video you will see some mistakes that can clearly be seen and sorry for that. \enjoy this video and i hope you like it.

This post will include many assignments, including shots and angles the video edition, my storyboard, as well as my video following the storyboard. We were assigned to create a slide knowing the learning the terminology of shots and angles in the video form. Simultaneously, we were also assigned to create a slide a corresponding slide, to our 1 minute tutorial video. I chose "how to make nutella toast". I was also required to learn the adobe program in order to create my video. Having knowledge of how to use the program I was able to create this assignment to the best of my ability. I was told to incorporate certain types of shots to be successful in this project. After having a certain amount of time, I completed having a confident feeling in my work.

Chris's Portrait Post

February 21, 2019 chris marquez 0 Comments

This assignment was quick and required less amount of time than normal assignments. This led to some missing quality. It required us to take pictures at four different stations where one's station had natural lighting, and two of them had a good amount of natural light, and one required the use of artificial light. Each station had a different lens and required a little bit of tinkering to take a good portrait. We took these portraits that were decent though the main purpose was that we analyze and study our mistakes so that we can take great portraits later on.

10 Steps to Creating a Good Portrait:

1. Frame your shot so that the subject takes most of the picture. Doing this will allow for less distraction on more focus on the subject.

2. Try using the Rule of Thirds. Doing this require to place your subject in one of the four intersecting lines or "sweet spots" and these spots are what our eyes are drawn to.

3. The depth of field. As your object being the most important thing, you want to keep your subject in focus so that the "ground" does not take away from your subject.

4. Taking back the saturation of the picture (making it black and white) can give your portrait a creative look.

5. Taking your time. If you are trying to get a natural portrait, take your time and take multiple shots, this gives you a higher chance of getting great portraits.

6. Decide on what your image you are trying to portray, this saves time for other options.

7. Using Reflections. The use of reflections creates an interesting and creative portrait.

8. Adding shadow. This gives the viewers more interest into the picture.

9.Playing with your light. This will create certain effects depending on how it is used.

10.Using props. The use of props will create contrasts of interest within the picture.

Photographing Motion by Caleb

February 21, 2019 Caleb Bremner 0 Comments

In the latest assignment of GCT, we needed to take pictures of motion. It does not matter the way we do it, all we need to do is take capture motion. The one rule is that we need to follow is to have the pictures taken in manual setting.

In the following slide deck we need to show out favorite motion picture, pictures that use the "panning" technique, stopping motion, exaggerated motion, and purposely blur the photo to show the hidden motion.

Shots and Angles: The Video Edition by Colin

February 21, 2019 Colin 8-16 0 Comments

This assignment was just like our Shots and Angles: The Photo Edition. But this time, its the Video Edition. We are working on a tutorial video that uses different shots and angles so we will basically be turning our old frozen photos and put them into real time. My tutorial is on how to make hot chocolate. I will be using different shots and angles like the "cut-in" or the "establishing shot".

Here are my definitions for the different shots and angles:

I was unable to complete my video.

Photographing Motion by Nicole

February 21, 2019 nicole 16 0 Comments

In GCT we were given an assignment based on learning to photograph motion, in this assignment we had to take pictures of 4 different techniques on photographing motion. Panning, stopping motion, exaggerated motion, and blur to show motion, were the 4 techniques we had to use to take these pictures. We changed the cameras settings to take pictures and experiment on how we use these techniques to take pictures of motion. On the camera we changed the settings of the light or the ISO for instance to change how crisp each of our pictures looked.

One technique we used to take pictures of panning was to move with the subject to have the focus of the picture on that subject, while everything in the background is blurry. This technique for panning gives the picture a focus as the subject can be clear and sharp, and the background gives the photo a contrast as it becomes a blur behind the focus. A slower shutter speed would be better to capture panning pictures because the slower speed causes the background to become blurry but because the main focus is moving and you move with it the main focus is able to be seen and is the most clearest and the contrast. You don't always need a tripod for this type of picture because you will be moving the camera to capture the subject moving, and could just stand still but turn with the camera as the person or thing starts to move.

The technique we really used to capture stopping motion was to take multiple pictures very quickly of the motion, to capture the movement as a clear and sharp picture. To really do this it took a lot of trial and error because even though you take a lot of pictures of the same movement only one could be possibly useable or none could be. But the result of these pictures always were one of the most interesting to me for the picture is so clear but the movement could be so abstract. For this picture a faster shutter speed would be better, because the faster you take each picture the more you are able to take and the water speed can also capture the motion in action. As for a slower shutter speed the motion would be wouldn't be as clear and crisp.

There isn't really technique i particularly used to capture exaggerated motion, because exaggerated motion just has to be a picture taken, but the focus of the picture isn't completely simple or minimized   as the focus can be exactly as it says exaggerated or even not normal. As the subject of the photo can be doing something simple as playing with a ball, but playing almost exaggeratedly or just positioned to show more motion in one picture. Regardlessly you can take exaggerated pictures just be positioned to show motion for instance a run up to spike a volleyball. I used a higher shutter speed to show on shot of the motion being more exaggerated. I used a tripod because so the camera would be still when i took the picture, but even without a tripod i think if you just take the picture with the subject positioned to show that exact motion then it would turn out clear.

To blur to show motion a technique i frequently used was to move around very frantically, wave my arms around ran around the focus of the picture and etc. This technique was fairly effective the only issues that occurred was if the focus was not as still and also became blurry or the camera settings weren't just properly set. In these types of pictures even though much of the picture is blurred to show the motion you also want a contrast the blurriness of the picture by something that doesn't move and stays still. In this way the picture will have a contrast of the blur and will have the focus which is clear and sharp in the picture. The shutter speed is better to be slower for these types of pictures because you want to capture the movement by the blur and that can only become possible if the speed was slower to capture the whole movement instead of capturing one moment of it. I would also change the ISO to be as low as it can can so the focus can become and sharp and crisp and it can get so it can attract more attention towards it.

Top 10 Tips & Tricks For Taking The Best Portrait Photo:

1. Setting Up - have the subject occupy most of the composition/picture

2. Rule of Thirds - have your subject at one of these points of interest and make sure to remove extraneous elements

3. Utilize a tripod.

4. Have the subject focused and the background blurred to put emphasis. (max out aperture)

5. Use long shutter speeds to create motion with lights (long exposure)

6. Utilize props to enhance the photo.

7. Subject when posing: (limbs & torsos)
(softly bent and curved) - feelings of brashness and masculinity
(straight and jagged) - feelings of softness and femininity

8. Direct instead of pose - give subject a role to play or emotion to act out after directing the position of limbs and torso

9. Capture motion - give subject an action to portray that creates movement (no blur)

Portraits Part 2

February 21, 2019 Mr. H 0 Comments

We are going to start working on Double Exposures.  You will need to process some of your portraits from the last time we took photos.

Choose 4 portraits. In Photoshop reverse select your portrait and use a white background.

Crop to by 5 by 4.

Here are some videos to show you how to create a Double exposure.  Each one is different.  Try all 3 and decide which one you like best.

Once you have made 3 double exposures we will retake a few portraits and use those images to make some final compositions.

Maegan's Portrait Post

February 03, 2019 maegan ilagan 0 Comments

Usually, we would be given an assignment and have plenty of time to execute it properly and creatively, however, this portrait assignment was very brief and direct. We were asked to take portraits of our partners in various locations and lighting conditions using 4 different camera lenses. There were shots taken outside in the natural light, inside close to a fairly good source of natural light, inside using artificial light and inside using very minimal natural light from the windows. Given that the time provided was very short, the resulting shots were pretty mediocre and lacking. This was the purpose of the assignment - to capture portraits that were merely average, study them, figure out our mistakes and learn to create more astounding portraits. This may be a short assignment but I have learned numerous things regarding how to use lighting adequately and how to properly set up your camera to support a desired depth of field.
