Photographing Motion by Haya

The grade 9 GCT class was assigned to take pictures in motion. We were given time to experiment and play around with the settings of the camera during class. We took turns taking pictures in groups using colorful items to shoot in motion. Capturing motion wasn't easy and there are many different types of motion to capture like, panning, exaggerated motion, stop motion, or blurring the background to show motion.

In this photo my friend Kiana is captured in motion while hula-hooping with four hula hoops. This type of photo is called stop motion. Stop motion is exactly like what it's called, a photo where you have stopped motion. For this photo our camera was put on burst or continuous shooting. When our camera was put on burst we looked through the photos to find one great picture with other unwanted ones.

This photo is featuring Waldo coming out of a locker. This type of photo is called blurred to show motion. For this picture we changed the setting of the camera to a slower shutter speed. This was one of the easier ways to caption motion. In this photo we also used a tripod to keep the camera from moving and adding any extra movement.

This photo captures my friend Kiana riding a bike in the snow. In this photo the subject is in focus but the background is not. This type of photo is called panning. Panning was one of the more difficult photos we had to capture because we had to do it without a tripod. It shows a sense of speed the subject is going.

This photo it captures my friend Yana flipping her hair. This type of photo is called exaggerated motion. In exaggerated photos, the subject is caught in an unusual or awkward position exaggerating the actions she is doing. To do this you would need a slower shutter speed.

This GCT Assignment was on Capturing Motion and experimenting with different settings on our cameras to see how we could do so. The four different types of motion shots that we had to capture were Panning, Stopping Motion, Exaggerated Movement, and Blur to Show Movement. These shots all required different camera settings like aperture, ISOs, and shutter speeds.

This technique is called "Panning". Panning requires some versatility in order to capture a good shot. Panning is like moving with the subject to capture an interesting shot. I used a shutter speed of 1/21 of a second to capture this photo of me walking. The background is sort of blurred, yet the subject is quite clear.

This technique is called "Stopping Motion". It's like freezing time, and it makes for really interesting photos. Keeping the camera steady using a tripod is essential to taking a photo such as this one because having shaky and twitchy movement within the photo can cause some severe blurring and it could have the potential to ruin your shot. Shooting a shot like this requires high shutter speeds to completely freeze motion and a good ISO to have a clean photo.

The technique used within this photo is called "Exaggerated Movement". This is when the subject(s) of your photo exaggerate their movements to make it look as if something crazy is happening. In this picture a one student is performing an exaggerated crossover to get past his defender, and the defender is trying to lock the guard down. Their movements make for a really good photo.

The technique used within this photo is called "Blur to Show Movement". This technique is used to show a clear background while the subject is in a blurred state to show that they are moving while everything else stays completely still. Using a slower shutter speed can capture some really good photos that have nicely blurred movement like the blur seen in the photo above.

Here is my slide deck for Capturing Motion.

Blurred Motion
The technique to show a blur to the motion is to have a low shutter speed, and keep a low ISO for a crisp photo. In this photo our goal was to show Mary in focus, while she is using the hula hoop which is moving but looks kind of blurred.

In this project, we were assigned to play around with our cameras to photograph pictures to capture motion. There are a few ways of showing motion, such as panning, stopping motion, exaggerated movement and blurring. This project was difficult to do at first because the photos were either too dark or too bright so we had to keep playing with the camera with the shutter speed, aperture and the ISO to get the proper kind of picture we wanted to take. A slower/smaller shutter speed allows us to take photos with a blur while a faster/bigger shutter speed makes everything in the picture look clear and in focus.

The photo above, is panning, Panning is where you move the camera with a moving subject to capture the effect where the subject is in focus while the things around them are not. I've used fast shutter speed to take this photo, such as 1/60. The shutter speed is enough to make the subject clear.

Stopping motion is where you take a picture when something is moving and capturing just one part of that movement. You would need a higher shutter speed so that everything in the photo is clear and in focus.

In an exaggerated movement photo, you can clearly tell that their gestures are exaggerated and more elaborated to make that model appear more expressive of their actions.

In the photo, this is called blur to show motion. It's where something in the photo is blurred while the others are in focus to show that something is moving, Such as in the photo above, the dice is blurred because the photo was taken when they are falling back down after the model had thrown them in the air.

Photographing Motion The Assignment

November 28, 2018 Mr. H 0 Comments

Title the Post
Photographing Motion by...

Label the post
Motion, Term 2, yourname

I the body of the post include:

Your favorite Motion Photo
Slidedeck that contains

Panning
Stopping Motion
Exagerated Movement
Blur to show Motion

You may have up to 16 Photos in your slidedeck and include title and descriptive title slides.

Blog post also has to have two paragraphs talking about how you are able to capture motion.

What is the technique used to pan? What shutter speed is optimal? How can you manipulate the camera to capture this effect?
What is the technique used to Stop Motion? What shutter speed is optimal? How can you manipulate the camera to capture this effect?

How can a model exagerate its movement to show motion?

What is the technique used to Blur to show motion? What shutter speed is optimal? How can you manipulate the camera to capture this effect?

Feel free to answer all or more of these questions in paragraph form.  Having a picture for each one would go a long way to helping explain what you are trying to say.  You know they say a picture is worth a 1000 words or at least a better explanation.

For this assignment the class was split up into teams and go capture motion inside the gym. My group captured motion in many different ways like panning, stopping motion, and blur to show motion.
I took many photos to show this and here in the slide down below shows the motion photos I took.

This photo shows blurred to show motion.

For this assignment we were given different colored eggs to play around with . but we had to shoot using the Manual Setting!!! We were given the task to take different shots with different textures, climate and lighting conditions. While we were shooting we had to keep changing the settings, like the F-stop , ISO and shutter speed. i learned that the lower my ISO the crisper my image will be and that the lower F-stop the more light  it will let in through the lens. And we weren't allowed to do any post production!!

An egg in manual settings is an assignment were given in GCT, in the assignment were supposed to take pictures of plastic eggs using only the manual setting on the camera. This assignment was to help and make us learn about manual setting how it works, how we use it, and more. This assignment gave me the opportunity on my own to experiment with the many possibilities that the manual setting offers and to struggle finding out what works for me and the pictures I take. This picture was one of my first pictures i took for this assignment, and because it was one of the first ones you can tell i wasn't yet comfortable with the setting and didn't know how to fix the lighting.

An Egg In Manual Settings :
Mr. Harbeck took us out to take photos but we had to figure out how to work the settings. It was very difficult at first, but I learned some things along the way. We learned how to make pictures brighter or darker without the use of editing. We learned to control the camera's shutter speed. The purpose of our project was to learn how to use the manual settings.

For this assignment, Mr. Harbeck gave us eggs as models. We were asked to take pictures of our eggs using the manual setting. My egg explored different locations in the school and in my home. Taking pictures outside was very difficult because there was too much light coming in. I figured out which ISO setting to use which helped my problem. As I got used to adjusting and figuring out the ISO, shutter speed, it became easier to capture the pictures.

In this assignment our class individually had to take pictures subjected to an egg, we went around the school.
The intent was learning the different factors that went into using a camera in manual settings.
We were presented with different requirements for each photo, and adjusting the ISO, Shutter speed, and f-stop helped situate for every photo. This task taught me different various settings incorporated photos, although the beginning was frustrating taking black pictures I slowly progressed and now have a better understanding.

In this assignment, we were given an easter egg to take pictures of in manual settings. We were in charge of changing the aperture, the shutter speed and the ISO settings in our cameras in order to get a good photo of our eggs. I kept playing around with the shutter speed and the aperture whenever we were taking the photos outside and inside. It's because outside has lots of light from the sun and inside there was only light from the building. For the ISO, it was better to have a lower ISO so the photo would be clearer, but if you require more light you needed to change the ISO higher. This assignment was fun to do because we kept playing with the camera and now I know how to take proper pictures in the manual settings.

Egg in Manuel Settings By RJ

In this assignment, we were given an egg and with the egg, we were tasked to take pictures of the egg in different areas and backgrounds. The slight twist was that instead of using the aperture or Av setting, we instead had to use Manuel settings and the main settings that we used in our photos was ISO, Shutter Speed, and F-stop. After this assignment, I had a better understanding of which settings do best with which conditions and what effect they have on the pictures. This brought out more options for me to use when taking different kinds of photos. Overall, this assignment was both fun and challenging and it really tested what I could do with a camera in hand.

For this assignment we were all given a plastic egg and we had to take pictures of it while using manual settings in different locations and lighting conditions. When doing this, we adjusted and played around with the aperture setting, shutter speed, and ISO. Doing this assignment helped us learn how to examine lighting conditions and understand how to manipulate our camera settings to get a good picture. In all my photographs I have my egg as the main focus but still making sure to showcase the different background settings and lighting. This was a more difficult assignment and most of my pictures were black screens but overall it was very fun and I enjoyed learning more about photography and camera settings.

In GCT we were given the assignment of photographing plastic eggs in various environments. While in manual mode we did our absolute best to take in account of all the elements such as lighting, aperture, and shutter speed to capture the best photos we could. Although I probably butchered most of my photos, I am glad to say I leave this assignment with a better understanding of my equipment and the importance of specific settings.

For this assignment, Mr. Harbeck gave us a plastic egg to take pictures of in certain places around the school. The pictures we took of the egg were in manual settings. This assignment was fun and a little tricky because we had to change the ISO, Shutter Speed, and other stuff due to the condition it was in. When we were outside, we had to make the shutter speed higher because there was lots of light from the sun. Although it was a little tricky, it was fun taking these pictures and I got to learn more about the camera settings.

How do you turn something as ordinary as a plastic egg into something interesting and eye catching? With this task, we really had to let our creative juices flow to come up with ideas that are captivating and not repetitious. Furthermore, shooting in manual mode was a requirement, which could end up both ways - a disaster or a gorgeous photograph. While shooting manually does tend to be very tedious while adjusting the settings, it was a very interesting experience, as the experimentation with shots resulted in varying photographs with the exact same subject. Admittedly, trying to figure out the aperture and shutter speed was a bit confusing, as well as figuring out what type of shot I wanted to produce. Do I want this shot in the bird's eye view? Worm's eye? Eye-level? Where do I want the light to hit? How should I position the egg? These were just a few thoughts that my indecisive self struggled with. However, I did manage to have end results that I am satisfied with.

For this assignment we received an egg from Mr. Harbeck. Our task was to go around and take pictures of the plastic egg. Mr. Harbeck has listed places where we have to take pictures of the egg. We had to take all the pictures in manual mode on our cameras. The different places also have different lighting conditions that we had to adjust the camera to.We had to analyze our lighting conditions to get the best of our pictures, like controlling our ISO, setting our F-stop and setting up our shutter speed. It wasn't easy, but we got to play around with the settings and learn more about the camera and photography as we did this assignment.
